Everett gem show to mark 59th year this weekend

This show’s still rockin’ after 59 years.

The Everett Rock &Gem Club’s annual Gem, Jewelry and Mineral Show runs Saturday and Sunday at the Everett Soccer Arena.

It’s a show where you get in for nothing and leave with something: Each child receives a free polished rock when they arrive at the show.

The Everett Rock &Gem Club, a nonprofit educational and recreational rockhound group that puts on the show each year, has turned this fundraiser into a premier event with thousands of visitors looking for high-quality entertainment, exhibits and products.

Demonstrations include specialists in wire wrapping, silversmithing and stone shaping. There will be a demonstration of “intarsia,” the art of cutting a variety of rocks and then joining the pieces to form one rock, similar to making a jigsaw puzzle.

Displays of fossils, exotic shells, beads and pearls, handmade jewelry, minerals and stone artwork also highlight the show.

Family events include a spin-the-wheel game for prizes and a critter-making activity area for creative play.

In mineral bingo, instead of numbers, the caller calls out the names of rocks. When players fill an entire bingo card, they get a gem stone, so it’s a game subtly disguised as a lesson in naming rocks and gems.

There’s also a silent auction and raffle drawing and a free door prize drawing every hour.

Visitors can also pick up maps of collecting areas and digging sites statewide.

The 59th annual Gem, Jewelry and Mineral Show will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Everett Soccer Arena, 2201 California St., Everett.

Admission is free.
