Guster goes acoustic at the Neptune

Guster is on the road for their first ever acoustic tour and Monday night they played the Neptune Theater in Seattle.

The Submarines opened the show and did an amazing job. I have been enjoying their most recent release the Shoelaces EP since it was released in December and my first time seeing them perform live was a real treat. It’s always nice when you love a band’s studio stuff and they don’t let you down when they are on stage.

I was a big Guster fan in high school but hadn’t seen them perform in eight or nine years so I was pretty excited to see them go all acoustic for the first time in almost 20 years of playing together. Some acoustic shows get a little serious and intimate. Not this one.

“This is our first acoustic tour. We have no idea what we are doing. We just thought we would go on tour and figure it out” said Guster front man Ryan Miller. They certainly seemed to be having a good time figuring it out.

Most of the night was spent telling jokes, poking fun at each other and taking requests from the audience. On a couple of occasions singers Adam and Brian got Luke and Ryan to sing lead vocals (video below) which was pretty funny considering Luke and Ryan aren’t exactly singers. Screwing around never sounded so good.

Even though the guys were getting in their jokes and having a lot of laughs with the crowd they still played an amazing set. A typical Guster show is a sing a long with lots of dancing and hurling of ping pong balls on stage. Those shows are always fun but seeing the guys play a pure, stripped down acoustic set like this was pretty fantastic.

The two videos below do a good job of showing what the night was like.
