High school thespians earn awards

Curtain call for local high schools: Students and teachers from Snohomish County got to take their bows Monday night during the sixth annual 5th Avenue High School Musical Theatre Awards.

Kamiak’s “Guys and Dolls” picked up an award for Outstanding Musical Direction; Stanwood’s “Fiddler on the Roof” earned awards for Outstanding Choreography (by a student this year) and Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. Also, Marysville-Pilchuck, Arlington and Edmonds Home School Resource Center each earned awards.

The 5th Avenue High School Musical Theatre Awards recognize exceptional musical theater productions from the 2007-08 school year. The awards were presented during a Tony-award style ceremony at Benaroya Hall in Seattle.

TVW will broadcast the awards ceremony in its entirety at 1 p.m. Sunday. The event may be viewed as streaming video at www.tvw.org.

Here’s the complete list of Snohomish County winners:

Outstanding Music Direction: Kamiak High School for “Guys and Dolls.”

Outstanding Choreography: Stanwood High School for “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Outstanding Orchestra: Marysville-Pilchuck High School for “Into the Woods.”

Outstanding Hair and Make-Up Design: Arlington High School for “South Pacific.”

Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (tie): Kentridge High School’s Danny Lindgren as “Nobel et. Al” in “Little Me,” and Stanwood’s Devon Uy as “Tevye” in “Fiddler.”

Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Featured Ensemble Role: Edmonds Home School Resource Center’s Natalie Hayes and Kaylee Jacobsen as “The Narrators” in “Children of Eden.”

Special Honors: Student Achievement: Edmonds Home School Resource Center’s Sara Thornton.

Two students from Archbishop Murphy High School, which performed “Beauty and the Beast,” were among the nominees:

Sara Hogenson received an honorable mention in the category of Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role as “Belle,” and Michael Elledge who played “Gaston” was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
