Are you unknowingly eating honey from China? Maybe. Is your organic honey mislabeled, tainted with low-grade extra sweeteners, pesticides or even outlawed chemicals? Maybe.
If you are at all into honey, you simply must read the Seattle P-I’s investigative series, Honey Laundering.
Check out the first story on the list for a mind-blowing overview of what’s really in – or might be in – mass-produced honey. I was surprised to learn that even Silverbow Honey of Moses Lake is a mix of local and imported honey, which, according to the series, is seriously under regulated.
It’s all yet another reason to mourn the impending loss of the P-I and yet another reason to buy honey from your local farmers market or awesome indepdent producers such as Bee Haven Honey and Pollination of Snohomish, featured as part of The Herald’s 2007 Get Fresh farm series penned entirely by yours truly.
What local honey do you favor? Whose has the best flavor?
