Big Read events: The Big Read free film series, in conjunction with the Everett and Sno-Isle libraries community reading program, continues at 2 p.m. today with the documentary “Regret to Inform” at Everett Public Library.

The movie was written and directed by Barbara Sonneborn, who was informed in early 1968 that her husband, Jeff Gurvitz, was killed in Vietnam just eight weeks after he was deployed.

On May 23, the library will show “Remembering Vietnam: The Wall at 25,” another documentary that tells of the decorated Vietnam vet who worked to create a national monument to the war’s fallen heroes in Washington, D.C.

This free film will be also be shown at 2 p.m.

Everett Library is at 2702 Hoyt Ave. Call 425-257-8000 or go online to www.epls.org.

Many copies of the Big Read book selection, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, are available for checkout at the libraries.

Another event tied to this program is an opportunity for military families to see and speak with their loved ones via a webcam and Skype setup in private rooms from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Lynnwood Library and from 1 to 9 p.m. May 24 at Mountlake Terrace Library.

You can call the libraries for an appointment or drop in: Lynnwood, 19200 44th Ave. W., 425-778-2148; Mountlake Terrace, 23300 58th Ave. W., 425-776-8722.

The website, www.sno-isle.org, lists more Big Read events.

Impossible odds: Author Norm Ollestad will talk about his true story, “Crazy for the Storm: A Memoir of Survival,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Third Place Books.

Ollestad was only 11 years old when he was flying in a small plane with his adventurous father to a ski event. The plane crashed in the California mountains, killing his dad and the pilot.

Ollestad had to call on the skills he learned from his dad to find his way down the mountain alone. The paperback version now out lists at $14.99.

Third Place Books is at 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park. Call 206-366-3333 or go to www.thirdplacebooks.com for more author events.

Cute cutouts: Children’s author Nikki McClure will meet her readership, kids ages 3 to 7, at 11 a.m. Thursday at University Book Store at Mill Creek.

McClure’s charming cut-paper art enhances her books, such as “Mama, Is it Summer Yet?” ($17.95).

The bookstore is at Mill Creek Town Center, 15311 Main St. Call 425-385-3530 or go to the University Book Store website at www.bookstore.washington.edu for more information.
