National honors for art students

Four students from Snohomish County have received a national award for their outstanding artwork through The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Katie Brandley, 16, who attends Cascade High School, received a gold medal; Sarah Donley, 16, Cascade High School, received a silver medal; Sara Portesan, 18, Meadowdale High School, received a gold medal, and Margarita Seroshtan, 15, Henry M. Jackson High School, received the American Visions Medal.

The program recognizes outstanding creative teens and offers scholarship opportunities for graduating high school seniors.

The students will be honored June 4 at a gala celebration at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The work of selected award recipients and high school seniors with top honors for portfolios will be displayed in Manhattan at the World Monuments Fund Gallery.

Marysville student a Washington Scholar

Nicholas J. Forsythe, a senior at Marysville Pilchuck High School, has been chosen as a Washington Scholar for 2009.

Nicholas and his family will be honored in Olympia at the Washington Scholar’s Day celebration onMay 20.

Everett student to present research

The Western Psychological Association selected Jessica Ramback of Everett to present her original research project, “Correlational Study on Myspace and/or Facebook and Relationships,” at its annual conference in Portland, Ore.

Ramback is a student at Concordia University in Portland. Concordia is a private Lutheran liberal arts university in northeast Portland that has a mission of preparing leaders for the transformation of society.

Founded in 1905, Concordia University serves 1,700 students through its College of Education, College of Health &Human Services, College of Theology, Arts, &Sciences and School of Management.

Local student earns nursing degree

Janet Walker of Everett was among the nearly 350 graduates who received diplomas in commencement exercises at Harding University, Searcy, Ark.

Walker received a bachelor of science degree in nursing.

The ceremonies were held in Benson Auditorium with Dr. Michael G. Justus, a Searcy family physician, as the featured speaker.

President David B. Burks presented the diploma to Walker.

Local student on Loyala dean’s list

Rachel Dean of Everett has been named to the College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean’s List at Loyola University of Chicago, Illinois.

Snohomish High senior wins scholarship

Sharon Danner of Everett has been awarded a Dean’s Scholarship for $1,500 for the 2009-10 academic year at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

The award is given to incoming freshman who have demonstrated outstanding academic merit and achievements in high school.

Sharon will graduate this year from Snohomish High School, where she has been involved in Drama, German Club, Band and Key Club.

At Eastern, she hopes to pursue a degree in physical therapy.

She is the daughter of Terry and Judy Danner of Everett.
