Strictly for animal lovers

As pet emporiums go, Firehouse Tails in Snohomish is a breed apart. Owner Debbie Kvamme has gone to great lengths to make sure that pet lovers – including dog, cat and horse people – and animal lovers in general, can find gift and decorating items to satisfy almost any taste.

Ceramic planters, serving dishes, mugs and statuary – featuring many dog breeds, cats, jungle animals and horses – are available in many sizes, colors and prices, with designs ranging from whimsical to elegant.

The upscale shop also offers designer clothing for dogs and humans, a wide selection of collars and leashes, jewelry, greeting cards and books, original paintings by local artists and custom items, such as personalized stepping stones, that can be special-ordered.

Barkley’s Bakery (named for the store’s official greeter, a lovable golden retriever who welcomes shoppers with a smile) is full of tasty treats for your canine companion, such as an array of cookies and cakes made to order for special occasions.

Firehouse Tails is at 127 Avenue A, Suite 4 (in the old firehouse building), in the antique/boutique district of Snohomish; 360-568-4154; www.firehousetails.com.

Bed, $261; Barkley, priceless!: Roomy, comfy dog beds, suitable for larger breeds, are available in a wide variety of colors, prints and fabrics. The beds are $261; the snoozing golden retriever isn’t for sale.

Pets and pawns: This whimsical chess set, featuring ceramic dog and cat kings, queens, knights and pawns, is $150.

Classy brass: Distinctive dog and cat doorbells, fashioned in solid brass, are $28.95 each.

Fancy feasting: These whimsical jester-cap feeding bowls (large $51.95, small $35.95) are among the many food and water dishes available in the store.

Pretty pillows: Pick a petit point or needlepoint pillow, adorned with your breed of choice, to add a touch of elegance to your interior decor. The Great Dane in needlepoint is $45; the petit point pug is $110.

Pet portraits: Original paintings, such as this charming and curious Shiba Inu with eyes glued to a tiny frog, are the work of local artist Karen McClelland. Framed paintings are $230, unframed are $120; many breeds available. Other works of art, such as hand-colored antique prints ($95, framed), can also be found in the store.
