Buying your first home is a milestone that deserves celebration. But since few will “buy new” for that first purchase, how do you make someone else’s home feel like yours?
For Irecia Kiske and husband Shawn, who purchased their first home in Marysville last year, one of their first projects was the kitchen – more specifically, their countertops.
“We’ve been working hard for a very long time to buy our own home and we achieved that goal last June. Our first project was installing new counters,” Irecia says.
As operations manager for Granite Transformations, Irecia was already well versed in the benefits of the engineered stone product, but experiencing the process as a client was new.
“For years, seeing all these people making their kitchens beautiful, I wanted that for our home too. And knowing our counters are eco-friendly, easy-to-clean, durable, and beautiful, there was no other choice.”
While natural slab granite is a porous material that must be sealed for more effective cleaning and stain-resistance, engineered stone is non-porous, offering a low-maintenance, easy-to-clean and anti-microbial surface, explains April Peterson, with Granite Transformations of North Seattle. “That means you get the look you love with the features you want.”

Timeless design: Renovations are about loving where you live now, but also building value in the home for later. “This is our starter home, and we know that when we’re ready to move up, the counters will be a huge selling point,” Irecia says.
Simple installation: No one looks forward to having their kitchen disrupted for days on end, so the less invasive and higher tech installation that permanently bonds the new counters to the existing ones is appreciated. “The templater came out to measure and create the template, then the installers were very professional – they started at 8 a.m. and were done at noon, leaving us with beautiful counters!”
Food-safe finish: As mom to two small children, the safety of the counters was of prime importance. Not only are they hard-wearing and resilient to stains, but the food-safe finish is safe for food prep, whether you’re kneading dough or rolling out pastry. “That’s a huge thing for us because our daughter loves to cook,” Irecia says.
Long-lasting beauty: Finding a product that stands up to everything a busy family might throw at it was also crucial. Dropped pan or hot pot? No problem! “Plus, with any product I buy, researching the warranty is essential,” Irecia says, pointing to the lifetime warranty of Granite Transformations’ US-manufactured product.
