Pocahontas council donates to Lions Club

Rosemary Stallings, Great Pocahontas of the Reservation of Washington, recently presented a $3,100 check to C. Phillips Thoriefson of the Northwest Lions Foundation.

The money will be used for the Lions Club’s Sight and Hearing Fund projects.

The presentation was made at the Degree of Pocahontas Tulalip Council 11’s meeting on June 25.

Motorcycle club donates to Christmas House

About 85 bikers recently participated in the annual Blue Crew Fun Run and enjoyed a 120-mile ride from the Smokey Point Cycle Barn to Everett Powersports.

Riders stopped at checkpoints along the way to collect numbers for a chance at winning prizes donated by area businesses. The annual event was organized and sponsored by the Gold Wing Touring Association, Chapter C, Evergreen Wings.

During the closing ceremonies, club representative Gerri Atkinson presented Pam Sorenson, Christmas House vice-president, with a $2,000 donation.

Many of the club’s members also volunteer in December to help when the nonprofit Christmas House store is open to low-income shoppers from throughout Snohomish County.

Nursery owner donates to medical research

Jenny Gunderson, an owner of My Garden in Mill Creek, recently won a national prize for a promotional display at her business.

The winnings — $2,500 — will be donated to Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure and the Alzheimer’s Association for breast cancer and Alzheimer’s research.

Gunderson’s parents suffer from Alzheimer’s and she is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

My Garden Nursery owners and their customers also have raised more than $10,000 for Alzheimer’s research.

Service

Mill Creek dance troupe performs for community

Dance team members from the Reflections School of Dance in Mill Creek recently participated in a fundraising event for the Jackson High School football booster club.

Most of the dancers’ performances are free to the community, including an annual dance concert in Everett that benefits orphanages in Thailand.

More information about the dance troupe is available at www.reflectionsschoolofdance.com. Dance team auditions are set for Aug. 29.

Rotary to raise money for ongoing projects

Everett Port Gardner Rotary Club members plan to have a booth at the Evergreen State Fair. The club is raising money by raffling off a restored 1956 Chevrolet.

All profits from this annual fundraiser go to community and international projects.

The club provides $5,000 in scholarships each year to Everett Community College students and donates to several other community organizations. The club also participates a Rotary International service project in a remote area of Guatemala.

Club members also spent a recent day cleaning up the home and garden of an elderly woman in the Eastmont neighborhood of Everett.

District 1 firefighters collect for MDA

Firefighters from Snohomish County Fire District 1 plan to collect donations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 7 and 8 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in a fundraiser sponsored by Local 1997 of the International Association of Fire Fighters.

The fundraiser began July 24 near Mariner High School.

Firefighters across the country participate in the Fill the Boot drive, using firefighting boots to hold the donations they collect for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Last year, Fire District 1 crews collected more than $16,000 for MDA, which helps children and adults who are affected by any of 40 neuromuscular diseases.

Honors

Junior Girl Scout Troop 876 members awarded

Five girls from Junior Girl Scout Troop 876 in Mill Creek recently earned the Bronze Award, the highest Girl Scout award at the junior level.

For their Bronze Award service project, Lauren Steck, Julia Christie, Madison Fetzer, Mackenzie Monten and Marley Medema ran a canned-food drive last fall, a clothing drive in the winter and hosted a taco dinner in May for Life Changes Ministry in Everett.

Troop leaders are Angela Steck and Maria Christie.

The Scouts plan to participate soon in a bridging ceremony as they move from Junior Girl Scout to Cadette Girl Scout rank.
