Everett: Comment on proposed city salaries

The city of Everett’s Salary Review Commission will meet at noon Monday in the eighth-floor hearing room of the Wall Street Building, 2930 Wetmore Ave.

The commission is made up of appointed members of the community and meets every other year to determine the salary schedule for the elected officials of the city of Everett.

The commission will draft a proposed salary schedule for elected officials that will be available for public comment during hearings at:

•Noon on March 21, eighth-floor hearing room, Wall Street Building, 2930 Wetmore Ave.

6 p.m. on April 21, eighth-floor hearing room, Wall Street Building, 2930 Wetmore Ave.

Water line topic for Port Gardner group

The Port Gardner Neighborhood Association meets at 7 p.m. Monday at the Jackson Elementary School Cafeteria, 3700 Federal Ave. All are invited.

Guest speaker Richard Hefti, a city engineer, plans to talk about the replacement of a 1938 water transmission line that runs along Charles Avenue to the reservoir. The city plans most of the work for the summer when school is out.

Patricia DeGroodt, an administrator at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, also plans to talk about the new hospital tower and about plans for the Pacific Campus.

Help coping with child’s mental illness

A free series of classes for family members who have a child or adolescent living with a major mental illness such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, panic or anxiety disorders or other mental health issues begins March 17.

NAMI Basics, a six-week series, is scheduled on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Everett.

The classes are taught by a team of trained volunteers with the National Alliance on Mental Illness/Snohomish County Affiliate. Class members learn to cope with these illnesses and become a better caregiver for their child or adolescent. The classes are limited to 20 people.

Lake Stevens: Stair climb team does well

A team of firefighters from Lake Stevens is celebrating this week after a successful entry at the annual Firefighter Stairclimb challenge at the Columbia Center tower in Seattle.

Team members from Snohomish County Fire District 8 each climbed up 69 flights of stairs in full firefighting gear in 26 minutes or less, team captain Lisa Defenbaugh said. They had to breathe through air tanks while climbing,

“It was really cool,” she said.

At last count, the team raised about $6,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through its efforts.

The team included Defenbaugh, Dave Safford, Larry Huff, Travis Welch, Scott Boswell, Garth Lervold, Jesse Abercrombie and Jerry Aamold.

Whidbey Island: Bridge lane closures

Drivers crossing the Deception Pass bridge this week should expect delays of 10 minutes while the bridge is inspected for safety.

One lane of the 180-foot-tall bridge crossing is expected to be closed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today through Thursday.

State Department of Transportation bridge engineers plan to extend a truck-mounted, steel arm and bucket over the railing and under the bridges to carry inspectors close to hard-to-reach parts of the bridge for thorough examination. The bridge is inspected every two years.
