EVERETT – The idled green crane that has irritated some homeowners along Everett’s waterfront for years is gradually disappearing and should be gone completely by Sept. 15.
The huge crane, once port property, was sold off years ago to a private company, which looked for a buyer who could put it to good use.
All the while, some residents of Grand Avenue overlooking the water complained that the crane was just sitting there and unnecessarily sullying their views.
The port and the owners agreed on several deadlines for its removal over the years, but they were never met.
Port deputy director Ed Paskovskis said Tuesday that the latest one, Sept. 15, will likely be met by current owner Stevedoring Services of America.
"The owner hasn’t found a merchantable use for it," he said, adding the company "decided to remove it piece by piece and to scrap its components for the best price it can find."
Members of a demolition crew hired by the company are using cutting torches to remove truck-size pieces of the crane, Paskovskis said.
The top of the crane, which was originally 225 feet tall, has already been removed and workers appear to be on schedule to complete the job by mid-September, he added.
