Calvary Fellowship offering Christian mentorship training

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Calvary Fellowship plans to hold a national training program to equip Christian ministries for mentoring youth Feb. 1and 2.

The training is to be conducted by the Christian Mentoring Institute with a focus on promoting best practices and high safety standards.

According to research conducted by the Harvard Mentoring Project, well over 20 million youth across the U.S. want and desire to have a mentor in their lives.

Yet the largest and most visible mentoring organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, was serving fewer than 300,000 youth in 2006.

With such a tremendous need and a growing gap between those who are matching youth and mentors, Mission to Mentor is providing the faith community with an alternative.

January is National Mentoring Month, with a significant emphasis on the need to engage more volunteers in formal mentoring programs.

The White House issued a press release in December calling on caring adults across the U.S. to join this effort.

Calvary Fellowship is at 23302 56th Ave. W. in Mountlake Terrace. Training starts at 10 a.m. Feb. 1.

Advance registration is required.

Church celebrates 25th anniversary

EVERETT — Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 9613 20th St. SE, kicks off a year-long celebration of its 25th anniversary with two events in February.

The church, a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is calling the year “Celebrating 25 Years – God’s Work, Our Journey.”

The congregation will look toward the future as it remembers and honors its past with activities such as the recording of oral histories, the return of former pastors for special “reunion Sundays” in the spring or summer, a fall visit by Bishop Chris Boerger of the Northwest Washington Synod of the ELCA, a massed choir performance including current and former choir members, an interactive time line to which members and friends will contribute memories, and, of course, several potluck dinners.

In honor of its 25th anniversary, Holy Cross hopes to raise $2500 to support the ELCA’s “Good Gifts” program of providing farm animals to combat hunger in poverty-stricken areas of the world. The congregation is a longtime supporter of benevolent organizations.

Celebratory worship and a reception are set for Feb. 3 at the church, at the corner of Highway 9 and 20th Street SE. Services are at 8 and 10:30 a.m., with the reception following the 10:30 a.m. service.

On Feb. 9, a silent auction and spaghetti feed will begin at 5 p.m. at the church. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children under 10, with a maximum of $20 per family. For more information, call 425-334-6817.
