KEY WEST, Fla. – Seven cyclists, including a paraplegic who pedaled with her hands, completed a 2,800-mile bike ride Wednesday on a route that enthusiasts hope will become an East Coast urban trail for hikers and bicyclists.
The trip from Calais, Maine, to Key West lasted 53 days and coursed through 15 states and Washington, D.C.
“To travel the entire East Coast by bicycle was an incredible thing,” said Mike Kruimer, of Edison, N.J. He and his wife rode on a tandem bicycle fitted with a hand crank so Anne, a paraplegic, could pedal.
The trip organizer, East Coast Greenway Alliance, aids local and state efforts to link such non-motorized trails. The route is now about 20 percent off-road and another 30 percent is being developed.
