EDMONDS – Police are investigating the mutilation of a missing pet that was found dead under suspicious circumstances.
An Edmonds animal control officer received a report of a missing Cavalier King Charles spaniel from a resident in the 1000 block of C Avenue Nov. 12, police said.
The pet was last seen in the owner’s back yard earlier that day. The pet was quite old and on heart medication at the time of its disappearance.
The mutilated body of the animal was found in the back yard of a home in the 1000 block of Eighth Avenue S. on Thursday. The homeowner who noticed the animal in the yard does not believe it was there the day before, police said.
The cause of death has not yet been determined. Police are trying to determine if the mutilation was caused by another animal or by humans. Several of the animal’s ribs were missing, but none of the internal organs had been removed. Investigators do not believe the case is related in any satanic rites, which are believed to have involved mutilation of animals in the past.
Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Edmonds Police Department during normal business hours at 425-771-0204. Because there is a possibility that the mutilation may have been caused by another animal, residents in the area should keep a close watch on any stray animals, police said.
