The Everett Planning Commission late Tuesday voted in favor of creating a historic district in the Riverside neighborhood.
Proponents of the district say it would help preserve the historic architectural character of Riverside from future developments.
Others say proposed rules infringe on property rights.
The proposed district encompasses Virginia Street and Baker Avenue between Everett Avenue and 19th Street. The proposed district includes about 450 homes, most of them constructed in the early 1900s.
The commission’s vote follows the endorsement of the Historical Commission earlier this month.
The Everett City Council, which has the final say, is expected to take up the issue later this year.
