Parents have heard a lot about problems caused by childhood obesity, author Joe Piscatella said, but they haven’t heard enough about what they can do to stop it.
Piscatella, founder of the Institute for Fitness and Health in Gig Harbor, will answer questions on what steps parents can take to stop the childhood obesity epidemic during a live online chat session at noon Tuesday at Heraldnet.com.
Piscatella is a specialist on the topics of childhood fitness and health eating issues.
While health problems such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes may be associated with weight issues, "I don’t think people really identify that this could be happening to their child until it hits," he said.
Piscatella underwent a major change in lifestyle following heart bypass surgery at age 32. After learning what he could do to improve his own nutrition and fitness, he began lecturing around the country.
His five books on fitness and healthy eating topics include "Fat-Proof Your Child: All About Healthy Kids" and "The Healthy Heart Cookbook."
