Homecoming prince asks grandmother to Granite Falls dance

Cheryl Wilson helped raise her grandson, Maccoy Christy. He wanted to show her his appreciation.

GRANITE FALLS — Maccoy Christy’s grandmother helped raise the boy and his siblings.

He showed his appreciation by asking her to celebrate homecoming with him at Granite Falls High School last weekend.

Maccoy’s grandmother, Cheryl Wilson, 61, went to dinner with him and his friends before the dance. She didn’t stay for the party because of school rules. It’s also difficult for her to stand for too long.

“She’s been there for me my whole life,” Maccoy said. “I just wanted to let her have a good experience and dress up and have fun.”

Maccoy, 15, is a freshman and was nominated as the homecoming prince. The formal was held Saturday night in the school gym.

Many of Maccoy’s friends already had dates, and he couldn’t think of anyone from school he wanted to ask. He started planning to bring his grandma a couple of weeks before the event.

He expected her to accept.

“I don’t really see how you could say no to that,” he said.

It was just like any other school dance proposal.

Maccoy wrote in bold cursive on a yellow poster board, “Will you be my sunshine at Hoco?” He attached sunflowers to the sign, which matched the bouquet he gave to her.

The boy and his family live on the same property as Wilson. Maccoy walked down to her house and knocked on her door holding the gifts.

“I thought he was showing me what he made to give to a girl to invite,” Wilson said. “It didn’t click right away.”

She put it all together when she saw her daughter, Angie Christy, who is Maccoy’s mom, and other family members standing nearby.

Maccoy asked, “So, will ya?”

Wilson said yes and hugged her grandson.

“She asked if I put him up to it,” Angie Christy said. “It was super sweet and she was pretty tickled.”

Wilson and her daughter went dress shopping the next week, which Wilson hadn’t done in a while. She’s used to wearing jeans and a T-shirt, she said.

She chose a black, mid-length dress with blue flowers printed on it. She paired it with a black blazer.

The night of the dance, Wilson’s daughters and granddaughter helped curl her hair and put on makeup. One of the most memorable moments was when Maccoy gave her a corsage, which also was made with a sunflower.

They all went to Jennings Memorial Park in Marysville to take pictures with Maccoy’s friends. Wilson tried opting out of some group photos, but her grandson made sure she was included.

The photos show the 9-inch height difference between Maccoy and his grandma. At 5-foot-10, he towers over her.

Angie Christy later dropped them off for dinner at Contos’ Pizza in Lake Stevens. After, the young ones went to the high school and Wilson said goodnight.
