WASHINGTON — The House has unanimously approved a bill to shut a loophole that allowed suspected Nazi war criminals to be paid millions of dollars in Social Security benefits.
The legislation passed Tuesday would terminate benefits for Nazi suspects who have lost their American citizenship, a step called denaturalization. U.S. law currently mandates a higher threshold before Social Security benefits can be terminated.
The legislation was introduced after an Associated Press investigation in October revealed that benefits have been paid to dozens of former Nazis after they were forced out of the United States.
