I-405 lanes to close for roadwork

BOTHELL – A full closure of northbound I-405 at the Bothell-Everett Highway is planned for tonight.

State transportation crews are scheduled to install two girders for a covered pedestrian bridge connecting a Sound Transit park-and-ride lot on the north side of I-405 with a new bus stop on the south side.

Crews plan to close the southbound carpool lane at 7 p.m. to bring in equipment to set the girders, according to state Transportation Department spokeswoman Laura Johnson.

The northbound carpool lane and the next lane over will close at 11 p.m., and all northbound lanes will be closed by midnight, Johnson said.

Traffic will be detoured off the freeway on the northbound I-405 ramp to Highway 527, and drivers can return to northbound I-405 using the onramp from the southbound highway lanes.

After the first girder is set, possibly around 3 a.m., crews will close the northbound I-405 off-ramp to the highway, project engineer John Chi said. The ramps from the highway to northbound I-405 will remain open.

Northbound I-405 drivers wishing to exit at Highway 527 can then follow a signed detour north on I-405 and I-5, turn around at 164th Street SW and head south.

All I-405 lanes and ramps are scheduled to reopen by 9 a.m. Sunday.

The new transit stop, on the onramp to southbound I-405, will allow southbound buses to avoid turning left over I-405 to reach the Canyon Park park-and-ride lot and then going back over the freeway, officials said. The improvements are expected to save bus riders up to five minutes per trip.

The setting of the girder was originally scheduled for earlier this week, but icy weather and equipment problems have caused multiple postponements, Johnson said.
