EVERETT — An Eastern Washington man pleaded guilty in Snohomish County Superior Court on Monday to a reduced charge of second-degree murder in a July 21 drug-related shooting.
Bryce William Howe, 18, of Newport is one of three people accused of murder in the death of Shawn Tuohy, 23, of Arlington in the parking lot of an Island Crossing restaurant.
No sentencing date was scheduled because deputy prosecutor Helene Blume expects Howe to testify in the trials of two co-defendants, a father and son, also from Newport.
Daniel Lawrence Young, 47, and Matthew Steven Young, 21, remain charged with first-degree murder. Matthew Young is scheduled for trial March 26, and Daniel Young May 7, Blume said.
Blume alleged that the three Newport men drove from Eastern Washington to a restaurant on Highway 530 near I-5 with plans to rob Tuohy. Via telephone, they made arrangements to meet him and sell him drugs.
The plan was for Howe to hide in the bushes and attack Tuohy with a wrench so the men could steal his money, Blume said.
The plan went awry when Howe jumped out of the bushes and struck Tuohy in the head with a wrench but failed to knock him out, Blume said.
Instead, Tuohy pulled a gun and started firing at Howe as he ran away. Blume accused Daniel Young of then pulling a pistol and shooting the Arlington man.
