LYNNWOOD — A man shot by police Wednesday night near Martha Lake may have been lobbing fireworks at deputies before the shooting, according to a recording of police radio traffic.
Killed was a Lynnwood man, 46. His identity was not released Thursday. Three Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies have been placed on leave in connection with the shooting.
The deputies were in the Martha Lake area about 7 p.m. investigating a report that the man was violating a court order, said Aaron Snell, a spokesman for the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team.
Deputies found the man at a home in the 15200 block of Meadow Road, just north of the lake.
“During a confrontation, shots were fired and the suspect was hit,” Snell said. No officers were injured.
The man was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died.
The man’s body was expected to be taken to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office, which will conduct an autopsy.
Police on Thursday did not confirm whether fireworks were involved.
Deputies on the dispatch recording reported the man had refused to come out of a trailer and was launching multiple fireworks at the cops, including bottle rockets. Deputies also discussed having dealt with the man before, and that he may have had mental health issues.
He apparently was shot in the driveway of the home. So far, police have not said whether the man was armed.
The deputies involved have been on the force five years, six years and 14 years, Snell said.
The SMART team, made up of homicide detectives from around the county, is investigating.
The death was the first fatal police shooting in the county since September, when a man living along Jim Creek Road near Arlington opened fire on deputies.
