BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A pilot was killed after a plane crashed today on the northwest tip of Lummi Island.
The pilot, who was the only person aboard the Empire Air craft, died at the crash at about 9:50 a.m., said Nancy Corey, regional operations officer for the Federal Aviation Administration.
The pilot’s name was not immediately released.
The plane, hauling cargo for Federal Express, crashed in a field off of Island View Drive, said Whatcom County Detective Sgt. Kevin McFadden.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
The plane, a Cessna Caravan, was headed from Bellingham to East Sound on Orcas Island, said Tim Komberec, president of Empire Air.
An emergency response team from Bellingham was ferried to the scene to clean up fuel.
