SEATTLE – A Seattle police officer was wounded in a shoot-out with a man who two officers saw shooting at a second man, authorities said.
The wounded officer, a six-year veteran, was alert and conscious when he was taken to Harborview Medical Center late Wednesday night for surgery after being hit in the abdomen, Officer Deanna Nollette said.
“Everyone is taking that as a good sign and is hopeful,” Nollette said. The officer’s condition was not available Thursday.
The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene on Aurora Avenue N.
Nollette said the officer who was wounded and his partner, a 12-year veteran, stopped when they observed gunfire while patrolling as part of the North Precinct’s anti-crime team.
Both officers stopped and returned the fire after a man started shooting at them, she said.
One man was taken into custody. Police subsequently began searching a room at the Georgian Motel, located near the scene of the shooting, Nollette said.
Montana: Prison time reduced on drug charge
A Washington state woman who let her toddler smoke marijuana from a bong has been resentenced to two years in prison followed by four years of supervised release.
U.S. District Judge Jack Shanstrom previously sentenced Jessica Durham, 25, of Elma to five years in prison. In September, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered resentencing. The appeals court agreed with Durham that the maximum sentence should be two years.
Durham, now living in Montana, was found guilty after a one-day trial in 2004 during which Brandi Nichols testified that Durham encouraged photographing her 18-month-old daughter with the bong. Nichols said Durham wanted to send the pictures to a marijuana magazine.
Nichols testified that Durham said she let her daughter use marijuana because the child did not eat or sleep enough.
