SEATTLE — Seattle is preparing to mail democracy vouchers to registered voters as part of a new campaign finance initiative.
KING-TV reported that voters and eligible participants will receive four $25 vouchers that can go toward funding political candidates who opt into the public campaign finance program. Elections officials will track the vouchers by identification number and barcode.
The Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission will mail out 2 million of the vouchers to registered voters on Jan. 3.
The SEEC has been working on implementing the program since Seattle voters passed it in 2015. Most of the prep work has been in education, outreach and creating a computer system to help track the vouchers.
The initiative is funded through a small property tax increase. SEEC estimates it at $11.50 per year for the average homeowner.
