PORTLAND, Ore. — The former stepmother of missing Oregon boy Kyron Horman was charged with theft after police in California found her with a gun that belonged to a roommate.
KGW-TV reported that the roommate reported the missing gun in 2015, alleging that Terri Horman took it from a safe in his Marysville, California, home. Officers said Horman had the weapon when they found her. She was charged with grand theft firearm, a misdemeanor, but failed to show for her arraignment.
Sgt. Bryce Heinlein of the Sacramento Police Department told The Oregonian/OregonLive that Horman was pulled over for speeding July 3. When officers saw she had an arrest warrant, she was taken to the Yuba County jail, where she was booked July 4.
Horman made bail and later pleaded not guilty to the theft charge. She is scheduled to appear in court in Marysville on Dec. 16, for the theft charge and failure to appear in court. Her attorney, Adam Richards, did not immediately return a phone message from The Associated Press.
Horman is using her maiden name, Terri Moulton. She has previously tried to change her name to Claire Kisiel or Claire Stella Sullivan. Horman withdrew one request and a judge rejected the other, saying it wasn’t in the public interest because an investigation remains open.
Terri Horman has been in the spotlight since 7-year-old Kyron vanished from his Portland school on June 4, 2010.
She told investigators she dropped the boy off for a science fair that morning. There has been no trace of him since. There have been no arrests.
Horman and the boy’s father, Kaine Horman, divorced after the disappearance.
Though she has not been identified as a suspect, Horman told People magazine she relocated to California to flee intense suspicion from Oregonians.
