RENO, Nev. — Donald Trump was rushed offstage by security officials Saturday night during a campaign rally here, but the candidate emerged back on stage after a few minutes and finished his speech.
As Trump was speaking, there was some kind of a disturbance in the front of the room. When Trump put his hand above his eyes to peer out into the crowd, security officials rushed to his side and escorted him offstage. People near the front of the room suddenly scattered as U.S. Secret Service and uniformed officers jumped the barricades to apprehend an unidentified man. After some commotion, the man was led out of the room by armed officers as the crowd clapped and cheered.
The Republican presidential nominee later concluded his rally without further incident. It was not immediately clear what the cause of the disturbance was.
The Secret Service said in a statement that no weapon was found but that a joint investigation with Reno police was underway. There was no word from the agency on the man apprehended by authorities, but local reports said he had been released.
Trump later released a statement thanking the Secret Service and local law enforcement for their “fast and professional response,” adding that “nothing will stop us — we will make America great again!”
After the disruption, Trump campaign aides and the candidate’s son Donald Trump Jr. retweeted a supporter’s comment crediting Trump for returning to the stage after an “assassination attempt” and noted that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton had cut an event short earlier Saturday in Florida because of rain.
Meanwhile on Saturday, a press bus carrying reporters covering Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, in Florida was hit at high speed, according to reporters traveling with Kaine. There were no immediate reports of injuries. Kaine was several cars ahead of the press bus, reporters in his motorcade said.
