WASHINGTON — As far as Washington power weddings go, the nuptials between two White House staffers proves that it’s not a VIP-packed guest list that counts – not when you have Vice President Joe Biden officiating at the ceremony.
Biden did the honors for staffers Brian Mosteller and Joe Mahshie at an intimate wedding on Monday afternoon at the Naval Observatory, Biden announced via Twitter.
“Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house,” he wrote. “Couldn’t be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys.”
Mosteller is director of Oval Office operations, though a Washington Post profile described him as the “anticipator in chief” who caters to the president’s logistical needs.
Remarkably for a guy who has spent decades in public office, it was the first wedding that Biden has officiated at, his office said in a statement, and he got a temporary license for the D.C. government to seal the deal.
Biden first endorsed same-sex marriage in 2012 — before President Barack Obama, a supporter of civil unions, similarly “evolved” on the issue.
