KENT – A head-on collision fatally injured a woman and closed the northbound lanes of I-5 for hours Thursday, snarling evening rush hour traffic.
The drivers of both vehicles were injured, and the woman later died at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, said trooper Kelly Spangler of the Washington State Patrol. The woman’s identity and the condition of the second driver were not immediately available.
The accident shortly before 5 p.m. occurred when a southbound Nissan Sentra driven by a man apparently hit the concrete barrier that separates the two streams of traffic, went through a gap in the barrier into the northbound lanes and collided with the northbound Acura driven by the woman, Spangler said.
The accident site was near the spot where I-5 intersects with Highway 516.
A tractor-trailer rig was also struck by one of the cars, but its driver was not injured, Spangler said.
The five northbound lanes in the area were all reopened by about 9 p.m.
