A Syrian linked to an Iraqi-based terrorist group, which was not named, has been arrested as the prime suspect in the rocket attack that barely missed U.S. warships docked in the port of Aqaba, the Jordanian government said Monday. Mohammed Hassan Abdullah al-Sihly plotted and carried out the attack along with two of his sons and an Iraqi, the government statement said.
Afghanistan: Several militants slain
U.S. and Afghan troops killed at least 40 suspected rebels in an offensive in the Kunar province near Pakistan, targeting militants who ambushed Navy SEAL commandos and shot down a special-forces helicopter in June, U.S. officials said Monday.
Greece: Mayday was never heard
Andreas Prodromou, 25, a flight attendant who had been taking flying lessons, seized control of the doomed Cypriot airliner that crashed near Athens this month and repeatedly radioed a final mayday that was never heard, according to a new report released Monday. The distress calls issued in the final 10 minutes of Helios Airways Flight 522 apparently went out on an incorrect frequency, the report said. Earlier Monday, the Transport Ministry issued a preliminary report on the Aug. 14 crash, which killed all 115 passengers and six crew, that said the Boeing 737-300 lost cabin pressure and eventually ran out of fuel.
