Cascade clinches district berth

EVERETT – The Cascade girls soccer team edged Wesco North opponent Stanwood 1-0 in overtime Monday night to clinch its seventh consecutive trip to the postseason.

The Bruins, who improved to 8-2-5 in league and overall, good for 29 points, earned at least the fourth and final 4A District 1 playoff berth with one game remaining. Cascade, just three points ahead of Stanwood (8-5-2, 26 points), holds the tiebreaker over the Spartans in the event the Bruins lose Thursday and Stanwood wins – which would tie the teams at 29 points.

“We graduated a lot of players from last year. We have a different team from last year,” said Cascade’s 11-year coach Jamie Gay, whose team lost in the first round of the playoffs last year.

“It’s a good showing for this team to get there (postseason) again.”

Cascade’s leading goal-scorer, Kelsey Lundberg, knocked in the game-winning goal from 6 yards out one minute into overtime. It was Lundberg’s ninth goal of the season.

“We had a strong offensive push the whole game,” Gay said. “In soccer it takes a number of shots to score. And we did that. We showed great determination in overtime.”

Cascade goalkeeper Brittany Gegax made three saves to record her ninth shutout of the season.
