There’s not too many boys swimming and diving teams that can match Cascade’s depth on the diving board. The Bruins have qualified four of their divers for the 4A District 1 meet, to be held Thursday through Saturday in Snohomish. One of those divers, first-year sophomore Joseph Hofman, already has posted a state-qualifying mark.
“I was his track coach last spring, and I noticed he was acrobatic. He was a hurdler for us, and he was doing backflips in the matroom,” Cascade swim coach Eric Smith said. “I said, ‘Hey, can you do that in the winter? You’re a diver now.’ He turned out for the team, and he took it seriously. He’s an all-around athlete, has natural ability and is one of our hardest workers.”
The Bruins also have some talent on the swimming side, including Jamie DeLong, Jacob Elenbaas, Andrew Nguyen, Corey Guntermann and Andrei Cira.
“We’d like go get a couple individuals (qualified for state),” Smith said. “Our primary goal is to get a couple of our relay teams through. We’ve had a successful season after losing some big names from last year. We’ve been holding our own in dual meets. Some guys who were in supporting roles last year have stepped up this year.”
