After spending the past five years at Jackson High School, Sherm Iversen is back for a second go-round as Cascade’s wrestling coach.
“We didn’t know how competitive we were going to be, but our big goal was to improve all season, and we’ve done that,” said Iversen, who coached the Bruins from 1998 to 2005. “The kids have adjusted to a new coaching style and are getting better and better. They’re picking up more pins, and certain individuals are getting more confidence.”
Iversen said junior Kaige Bunsngeam (132/138 pounds, three first-period technical falls), senior Yasin Alissa (138/145, a team-leading 15 pins), senior Ricardo Villalpando (145/152) and sophomore Elijah Humbyrd (220) have stood out this winter.
“Ricardo was an alternate to state as a sophomore but didn’t wrestle last year,” Iversen said. “I wouldn’t have even known that he took a year off. He hasn’t missed a beat. He’s pretty creative and smooth, but fairly technical.”
