Lake Stevens freshman shines in the shot put

LAKE STEVENS — The shot put competition at Lake Stevens just got a little bit stiffer.

Freshman Briyanna Blue won the event in a non-league meet with Jackson and Lynnwood on Thursday with a throw of 35 feet, 9 inches. The toss was more than 2 inches better than her personal best and 7 inches better than Lake Stevens teammate Leah Grassi, who was a state qualifier last season.

Lake Stevens won the meet with 108 points, taking first in 10 events.

“It was not only her first high-school win, but beating Leah is a heck of an accomplishment for her. She was pretty excited,” Lake Stevens coach Jeff Page said of Blue. “She doesn’t ever beat Leah in practice, but she’s a freshman, so she’s getting better all the time. I think she’s on Leah’s radar now.”

Grassi was at least 4 inches better than everyone but Blue in the shot put. She also won the discus with a toss of 95-2. Blue was third in that event.

Lake Stevens sprinter Taryn Wright also had a personal best, winning the 400-meter dash in a time of 1 minute, 2.81 seconds.

Arlington 81, Shorewood 69, Meadowdale 36: At Arlington, Kjirsten Jensen finished first in the shot put (37 feet, 9 inches) and discus (106-3) to lead Arlington to victory in the non-conference meet. Jackie Lykstad led Shorecrest with wins in the 100- and 200-meter hurdles and Hannah Landerholm won the 100- and 200-meter dash for Meadowdale.

Everett 83.5, Oak Harbor 74.5, Mountlake Terrace 30: At Oak Harbor, Kirsten Smith was a three-event winner, placing first in three field events (discus, javelin and shot put) to lead Everett to the Wesco meet win. Mietra Smollack (800- and 1600-meter runs) and Carson McKole (100 and 200) each won two events for Oak Harbor. The duo also led Oak Harbor’s 800-meter relay team to victory.

Edmonds-Woodway meet: At Edmonds, Kelsey Brennan won the shot put (36 feet, 4 inches) and javelin (128-0) to boost Monroe to the non-conferene win. Cascade’s Katy Gross won the 110-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump and Katie Tougas won the 100 and 200 dashes for Edmonds-Woodway.
