Lake Stevens freshman shines in the shot put

LAKE STEVENS — The shot put competition at Lake Stevens just got a little bit stiffer.

Freshman Briyanna Blue won the event in a non-league meet with Jackson and Lynnwood on Thursday with a throw of 35 feet, 9 inches. The toss was more than 2 inches better than her personal best and 7 inches better than Lake Stevens teammate Leah Grassi, who was a state qualifier last season.

Lake Stevens won the meet with 108 points, taking first in 10 events.

“It was not only her first high-school win, but beating Leah is a heck of an accomplishment for her. She was pretty excited,” Lake Stevens coach Jeff Page said of Blue. “She doesn’t ever beat Leah in practice, but she’s a freshman, so she’s getting better all the time. I think she’s on Leah’s radar now.”

Grassi was at least 4 inches better than everyone but Blue in the shot put. She also won the discus with a toss of 95-2. Blue was third in that event.

Lake Stevens sprinter Taryn Wright also had a personal best, winning the 400-meter dash in a time of 1 minute, 2.81 seconds.
