Lake Stevens places second in Tri-State Tournament

COEUR D’ ALENE, Idaho — Zach Zweifel won the 112-pound weight class at the Tri-State Tournament Saturday, leading the Lake Stevens Vikings to a second-place overall finish with 120 points.

The Vikings also got third-place finishes from Josh Heinzer (103), Josh Eacrett (140), and George King (145) and fourth-place finishes from Josh Villani (119) and Zach Teuber (285). Alex Pelligrini placed fifth at 130 pounds and Sean Anderson was eighth at 125 pounds.

“It’s an indication that we’re on the right track to make a run at a state title,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said. “It’s nice to see our guys come in the back door — that’s where you win these tournaments.”

The Vikings were without the services of Josh Monson, a Tri-State finalist last year who placed fifth at 135 pounds in the 2007 4A state tournament. Monson was battling a knee injury, Barnes said.

“Without him in there and the way the team stepped up, it was a good team effort,” Barnes added.
