Lakewood solidifies hold on second place

MARYSVILLE — For now, the uprising has been squelched.

Lakewood retained solid footing in the Cascade Conference and kept Sultan from making a move up the standings with a 1-0 victory Thursday night at home.

“This was one of those games we definitely needed to win,” Lakewood head coach Vaughn Vandelac said. “It puts a little more space between us and them.”

Lakewood, now 8-1 in the league, is in sole possession of second place. Sultan fell to 4-4.

The lone goal was scored on a header by Joseph Hawkins in the 36th minute, assisted by Evander Ochoa.

The Lakewood defense did the rest, as keeper Peter Karrenberg earned the shutout.

“It was a pretty tight game, but we controlled the flow of the game. We had our chances, but didn’t put it in the back of the net. But we got the one and the defense did the rest,” Vandelac said. “Our defensive keeper gobbled it up pretty good. They had a couple breakaways, but our defense stopped them.”
