Nelson’s defense leads Bruins past Monroe

EVERETT — Cascade’s defensive “guru” helped guide the Bruins to a Wesco North victory Wednesday night.

Led by junior Spencer Nelson, Cascade held Monroe to nine points in the final quarter, and the Bruins overcame a dismal third quarter to beat Monroe 40-36 at Cascade High School.

“Spencer Nelson has been our defensive guru,” Cascade coach Carlos Humphrey said. “We start to feed off her and we get it done.”

Trailing 21-13 at halftime, the Bearcats held Cascade to just five points in the third period to take a 27-26 lead.

But Humphrey said that Nelson helped the team refocus on defense heading into the final quarter. Cascade outscored Monroe 14-9 in the fourth to come from behind and win.

Nelson held Monroe’s Emily Drivstuen, who was averaging 10.8 points per game heading into Wednesday night’s game, to just four points.

Danielle Love had her third straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Katy Gross scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Bruins.
