Prep baseball roundup: Lakewood ‘takes care of business’

MARYSVILLE — Lakewood inched closer to Cascade Conference baseball leader Cedarcrest as the Cougars defeated Coupeville 7-2 Wednesday at Lakewood High School.

Cedarcrest — which is on its bye week — is in first place with a 12-3 record. Lakewood sits a half-game back with a record of 11-3. Archbishop Murphy lurks two games back of Lakewood at 9-5.

Cedarcrest and Lakewood conclude conference play next week. The Cougars play a three-game series against Granite Falls, which is tied for last place with South Whidbey, which plays Cedarcrest in a three-game series.

Next week’s games could go a long way in determining who receives the Cascade Conference’s two automatic berths to the district tournament.

“As long as we keep winning, we’re taking care of business,” Lakewood coach Larry Delaney said.

The Cougars used timely hitting and two Coupeville passed balls to score all seven of their runs in the fourth inning on Wednesday.

Jon Brown had two hits, including an RBI single in the fourth, and Marcus Harkins had two hits and two RBI to lead Lakewood.

Derek Grafenauer pitched a complete game for Lakewood, striking out five and allowing four hits.

“It was a solid performance,” Delaney said. “We took care of the ball defensively and it was a good solid performance.”

Alex Evans had two hits, incluing a home run for Coupeville.
