Prep soccer: Jackson beats champs, but winds up second

EDMONDS — Cara Wegner scored in the 52nd minute and Jackson pulled out a tough 1-0 victory over Meadowdale Thursday night at Edmonds District Stadium.

The only problem? Meadowdale still won the Wesco South based on points.

“Pretty hard to go undefeated in league and not win it,” Jackson head coach Mike Bartley said.

Jackson finished 7-0-2 in league, but Meadowdale finished 8-1-0 to edge Jackson for the conference title on points.

On Thursday, Wegner ran right baseline and took a pass from Jessie Murphy, then lobbed the ball just under the cross bar and over Meadowdale goalie Tanya Zickefoose for the only score of the night.

The Panthers (6-8-1 in league and overall) will be the fifth seed out of the North and play the fourth seed out of the Wesco South in a play-in game for the 4A District 1 tournament. Hope Thompson (40th minute) and Carson McKole (59th minute) accounted for Oak Harbor’s goals. Cori Brown stood in goal for Snohomish while Janelle Green went the distance for the Wildcats (1-14-2).

After a Bearcat goal in the 42nd minute, Laina Weber scored for the Tomahawks in the 45th minute. Mady Schoonover had the second goal for Marysville-Pilchuck in the 65th minute, again minutes after Monroe scored. Lauren Schoonover was the goalkeeper for the Tomahawks (2-11-3).
