Prep swimmig: 4A state prelims

FEDERAL WAY — Matt Roe moved a step closer to his goal of becoming a double state champion Friday when the Stanwood swimmer qualified first in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events during prelims at the King County Aquatics Center.

Roe swam the 200 in 1 minute, 43.93 seconds and the 500

in 4:40.72.

Roe also swam on Stanwood’s 200 medley relay team, which qualified fourth, and its 200 freestyle relay team, which qualified second.

Snohomish’s Bryan Harvey also qualified first in two events — the 100 freestyle (50.91) and 100 backstroke (52.72).

Kamiak demonstrated its depth, qualifying for the championship final in all three relays. The Knights were third in the 200 medley, fifth in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 400 freestyle.

Kamiak also fared well individually, bolstering its chance at a state title. Liam Sosinsky qualified sixth in the 200 individual medley and second in the 100 breaststroke. Chris Choi qualified seventh in the breaststroke. Kris Bratvold qualified third in the 50 freestyle. Scott Wanner qualified third in diving and teammates Felyx Tsoi (19th) and Sean Mulvihill (24th) were still in position to reach the top 16. John Stupey qualified third in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 100 backstroke.

Kamiak can also expect points from its swimmers in consolation finals: Tyler Cheung (200 freestyle), Choi (200 individual medley), Brian Burns (50 freestyle) and Trent Roberts (50 and 100 freestyles), Andre Tacuyan (100 butterfly), Bratvold (100 freestyle) and Kyle Kusuda (100 breaststroke).

Other Western Conference championship qualifiers included Andre Winquist of Marysville-Pilchuck in the 200 freestyle, Nick Win of Jackson in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, David Escobar of Stanwood in the 50 freestyle, Josh Estella of Marysville-Pilchuck in the 100 butterfly and Spencer Girard and Connor Hemming of Marysville-Pilchuck in the 100 breaststroke.

Qualifying for consolation finals were: Justin Murell of Stanwood in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke; Girard in the 200 individual medley; Eric Ellersick of Cascade in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly; Hemming, Taner Husby and Kraymer Lorig of M-P and Mic Kilpatrick of Snohomish in diving; Tanner Hoidal of Cascade and Escobar in the 100 freestyle; Pete Doolittle of Edmonds-Woodway and Asahel Jenkins of Cascade in the 500 freestyle, and Cameron Chaplik of Stanwood in the 100 breaststroke.

Other relay qualifiers included: Marysville-Pilchuck, Snohomish and Cascade in the consol final of the 200 medley; M-P in the consol final of the 200 freestyle, and Snhohomish in the consol final of the 400 freestyle.
