Seahawks wrap up minicamp; no decision yet on Banks

The Seahawks wrapped up their final minicamp of the offseason, meaning players will go their separate ways until training camp starts in late July. While it would have been a lot cooler if it did, the end of practice did not look like this:

(warning, a bit of naughty language included in this clip)

There was a fun moment at the end of the day, however, when the competition between defense and offense was decided by field goal attempts by DE Bruce Irvin and G Deuce Lutui. Irvin drilled a low line drive through the uprights, while Lutui missed wide right.

The big story of the week was the tryout for LB Brian Banks, who has become something of a national sensation in the past few weeks since he was exonerated the rape conviction that put him in prison a decade ago, and is now trying to defy the odds and make an NFL roster at the age of 26.

Pete Carroll said Banks “Exceeded my expectations” but also conceded that Banks is not yet in the type of shape he needs to be. Carroll said they’ll study the film of this week’s minicamp before decided whether to offer Banks a contract and an invite to training camp.

Another tryout player of note is receiver Antonio Bryant. Bryant has been out of football for two years because of knee injuries, but did have more than 1,200 yards in 2008. He admitted he wasn’t in good enough shape, but said that if he does get a chance to come back for training camp, he’ll show he can come back and be “be better than I was.”

When training camp does get going, Carroll expects to have everyone healthy with the exception of T James Carpenter, who is recovering from a knee injury, and possibly CB Walter Thurmond, who is coming back from a broken leg.
