Locals honor heroic officers of Lakewood

The deaths of the four Lakewood police officers sent shock waves throughout the state. The sadness of the killer’s actions is being felt most keenly by the brotherhood of police officers.

South Snohomish County police departments demonstrated their support for the Lakewood Police Department and the officers’ families by being present at the memorial service Tuesday.

About one-third of the Mill Creek force was represented at the services for the four fallen officers. Robin Swanson, support services manager for the Mill Creek Police Department, said that five unmarked and marked police vehicles were in the procession.

The Mountlake Terrace Police Department sent a contingent of 15 to 20 officers. Edmonds sent three motorcycle officers to assist in the procession in addition to several officers attending the service.

Other members of local police forces have made visits to the memorial honoring their fallen colleagues at the Lakewood Police Department. A Mill Creek commander visited the memorial site delivering a framed poem with the Mill Creek Police Department patch.

All departments said they stand ready to fill patrol shifts for Lakewood or the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office whenever those departments seek assistance. Chief Greg Wilson of Mountlake Terrace said that his force sent three officers into Seattle for the 24 hours they asked for help during Officer Tim Brenton’s memorial service.

Some are beginning to coordinate donations to honor the fallen officers. Lynnwood police will be collecting donations during their Shop With A Cop event Thursday.

Local businesses also are mounting fundraising events to benefit the families.

Papa John’s pizza locations throughout the Puget Sound area, including Lynnwood, are donating profits from all orders placed Dec. 8 and 9 to the Lakewood Police Independent Guild Benevolent Fund. Donations also are accepted online at www.papajohns.com.

The 22 Merrill Gardens communities are hosting spaghetti dinners to raise money for the fund. The Mill Creek Merrill Gardens event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today. Dinner will be available for a minimum $10 donation. All proceeds will be donated.
