Early results on Tuesday night in many legislative races showed incumbents holding up against their challengers.
1st Legislative District
Rep. Derek Stanford, D-Bothell, is leading against Republican opponent Sandy Guinn in the race for State Representative, Position 1. Incumbent Luis Moscoso, D-Mountlake Terrace, also appears to be ahead of Republican Mark Davies in the Position 2 race.
The district includes most of Mountlake Terrace, all of Brier and Bothell, part of Kirkland, unincorporated areas of King County between Bothell and Kirkland, and unincorporated areas of Snohomish County north and east of Bothell.
10th Legislative District
Incumbent state Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton, was beating her Democratic challenger, political newcomer Aaron Simpson.
In the race for the open seat held for five terms by Rep. Barbara Bailey, the totals were closer. Camano Island State Park manager Tom Riggs, a Democrat making his second run for the position, was losing to Dave Hayes, a Republican, by about 2 percentage points.
The district includes the northwest corner of Snohomish County, a portion of Skagit County and all of Island County.
21st Legislative District
Marko Liias, D-Everett, appears to have been elected for a third term as state representative in the 21st District. Liias is beating first-time challenger Kevin Morrison with 60 percent of the vote.
The 21st District covers the southwestern part of Snohomish County, including most of Mukilteo, Lynnwood and Edmonds.
32nd Legislative District
Rep. Cindy Ryu, D-Shoreline, looks to be heading toward her second term as she has a strong lead over Republican Randy Hayden in the race for State Representative, Position 1.
Rep. Ruth Kagi, D-Seattle, is also ahead of her Republican opponent, Robert Reedy, in the Position 2 race. She is seeking her eighth term.
The district includes Lynnwood, part of Mountlake Terrace, Woodway, south Edmonds, nearby unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County, Shoreline and part of northwest Seattle.
38th Legislative District
Rep. John McCoy, D-Tulalip, who is seeking his sixth term, is leading the race for State Representative, Position 1 against Republican challenger, Sam Wilson.
In the contest for Position 2, Mike Sells, D-Everett, who is seeking his fifth term, was leading over Republican Michael Casey.
The district includes much of Everett, Marysville and Tulalip.
39th Legislative District
Rep. Kirk Pearson, R-Monroe, was leading in his face for the state Senate seat in the 39th District, which covers parts of Arlington, Monroe and Sultan plus rural areas of Skagit and King counties. Pearson is beating Democrat candidate Scott Olson with 56 percent of the vote.
Dan Kristiansen, R-Snohomish, is heading toward a sixth term as a state representative in the 39th District in the race for Position 1 against first-time candidate Linda Wright. Kristiansen was leading with 54 percent of the vote.
In another race for Position 2, Monroe resident Elizabeth Scott, a Republican, is leading Democrat Eleanor Walters of Snohomish with about 53 percent of the vote.
44th Legislative District
Rep. Hans Dunshee, D-Snohomish, is leading in the race for State Representative, Position 1 against Mill Creek councilman Mark Harmsworth with almost 54 percent of the vote.
Dunshee has been a legislator for the past 18 years.
In the race for Position 2, Rep. Mike Hope, R-Lake Stevens, appears to have been re-elected for a third term.
He is leading against first-time Democratic candidate Mary McNaughton with 55 percent.
The 44th District covers the cities of Lake Stevens, Mill Creek, Snohomish and parts of Everett and Marysville.
