PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Cascade defenders hold Oak Harbor scoreless in 15-0 victory

EVERETT — Defense wins championships and the Cascade Bruins used their stifling defense to start their season on the right track with a 15-0 win non-league over Oak Harbor.

“Team defense,” Cascade defensive coordinator Nick Clovsky said. “We had a combination of good pressure and good coverage.”

Chris McGrath had a 43-yard return on one of the Bruins’ two interceptions. Cascade also recovered two fumbles.

“We’re pretty happy with the result,” Clovsky said. “Oak Harbor’s a well coached team … we have a lot of respect for their program. It’s a real confidence builder.”

Cascade’s Aaron Miller helped on the offensive side of the ball with with 18 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown, and fellow senior Dominique Moore had 84 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown as well.

The Bruins combined for 240 yards rushing, significantly more than their 22 yards passing.

“We’re excited about our team,” Clovsky said.

Quarterback Clarence LaMont led Oak Harbor’s effort completing 17 of 30 passes for 119 yards. The Wildcats threatened late in the game, driving to the Cascade 20-yard line. But a couple of bad snaps took them out of scoring range.

Cascade is hoping to improve after last year. Clovsky says not making the playoffs really crushed last years Bruins.

“Our expectations at Cascade High School are to be a playoff team every year,” Clovsky said. “If not then we see it as a disappointment. Last year was a disappointment. We want to respect tradition and use the fire to motivate the team this year.”
