Beer of the Week: For a Beer or a Lifetime, Foggy Noggin Brewing, Bothell

For a Beer or a Lifetime

Foggy Noggin Brewing, Bothell

Style: Amber Ale

Stats: 5.5 percent ABV, 55 IBU

Available: On tap at the brewery and at this weekend’s Bothell Beer Festival

My thoughts: When I think of Bothell beer, I often think of Foggy Noggin. Jim Jamison has been brewing his English-inspired brews out of the shed in his back yard since 2010. They’re consistently good and authentically English, right down to the names, Bit O’ Beaver, Christmas Duck, Rufus, etc.

If you’ve lived in or near Bothell for much of your life, you’ll recognize the name of this beer. The old Bothell sign that welcomed visitors said, “Welcome to Bothell: For a Day or a Lifetime.” Sales from this beer, an amber ale, will go to helping bring back the old Bothell sign.

Jamison said he’s only brewed an amber one other time, but felt like doing something special to raise money for the sign. A little wheat in the grain bill gives the beer a honey-like up front sweetness. But there is a nice bitter finish. It’s a very sessionable beer for a festival.

It’s also no surprise that the official beer of the third annual Bothell Beer Festival is from Foggy Noggin. The pale ale, named BB16, is a true English pale ale. Brewed with four different hops, including British hops Northern Brewer and Challenger, BB16 is a crisp, malty pale ale that is perfect for a stormy October day.

Enjoy both beers at this Saturday’s Bothell Beer Festival.

From the brewery: Malt bill consists of 2-Row, Maris Otter, Chocolate, Crystal and Wheat. Hops consist of Magnum, Cascade and Centennial. Proceeds from this beer are contributed to the “Bring Back The Welcome To Bothell” sign fund.

Righteous Indulgence Altbier, 5 Rights Brewing: An assertively hoppy yet deliciously malt-forward October delight that would have been a staple at Martin Luther’s brewery. Uses all German malts and noble hops. Available at the brewery and Brats of Deutschland.

Abseiling Away Double IPA, Sound to Summit Brewing: The big brother to this Snohomish brewery’s 6 Gill IPA. At 8.5 percent and 76 IBU, it has a big kick and a soft bitterness that lingers. Available at the brewery.

Fresh Hop Ale, Beardslee Public House: This fresh hop ale has 75 pounds of Mosaic hops from Carpenter Ranch that went into the wort within seven hours of harvest. Notes of tangerine and papaya. Available at the brewery.

Single Hop Falconer’s IPA: The same malt profile as the Edmonds Brewery’s Revolutionary IPA, but hopped with Falconer’s Flight hops. Notes of tropical fruits and mango. Available at the brewery.
