It’s the tail end of Seattle Beer Week, a 10-day celebration of all things Seattle beer, but it might as well be Bothell Beer Weekend. From Foggy Noggin just outside the city to the downtown city blocks, there will be a number of beer-centric events in Bothell this weekend.
To mark the occasion, Foggy Noggin’s Jim Jamison brewed the first ever IPA named in honor of the small city that straddles the Snohomish/King county boundary and sits aside the Sammamish River. Kegs of Foggy Noggin’s Bothell Fn IPA will be tapped for tonight’s Seattle Beer Week event at the brewery.
“We wanted to make a beer that had an identity of the old and the new, something that we felt resembled what Bothell is transforming into,” Jamison said.
A producer of English-style ales, Jamison stuck to what he knows best to build the malt bill in the Bothell Fn IPA, using North American 2-Row and British Crystal malts. What’s new and different is the use of Chinook hops, not an unfamiliar hop to many brewers but one Jamison said he’s never brewed with, and German ale yeast.
Jamison’s hope was that the German ale yeast, which generally gives beers a cleaner flavor profile with less esters than other yeasts, would allow the hops to shine. The result is a beer with more of a citrusy nose and flavor punch at the beginning, evolving into a bitter dryness on the back end.
“I can’t think of any other brewers putting a German ale yeast into an IPA,” Jamison said. “We’re trying to make a local beer, too, and Bothell has an English and German tradition, so it made sense from that point of view.”
Jamison will be pouring a keg and cask version at tonight’s event, which starts at 3 p.m. and continues Saturday. He said both are likely to be gone before Sunday.
Here’s a look at some other events happening in Bothell this weekend:
Bothell Block Party and Brewfest: The Greater Bothell Chamber of Commerce and University of Washington’s Bothell campus team up to put on this annual brewfest from 3 to 8 p.m. May 19 in downtown Bothell. There will be 18 breweries pouring beers, including six Bothell breweries, and a cidery. Advance tickets are $25 or $30 at the door. There will be live music and food trucks. Donuts, Beer and Bothell: Bothell’s The Hop and Hound is hosting a donut and beer pairing from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 20 at the bottleshop. There will be pairings of beer with a flight of four donuts from Countryside Donut House.
Other brews on this week’s taster tray:
Unforgiven, Sumerian Brewing: Straw colored, hazy New England-style IPA with subtropical fruity notes and hints of pine. Available on tap at the brewery.
Prosted!, Whitewall Brewing: A tribute to Bavarian heritage, this IPA is brewed with all German hops — Magnum, Hercules, Huell Melon and Mandarina Bavaria — giving it a citrus backbone and spicy and piney finish. Available on tap at the brewery.
