EVERETT — A Bellevue man was seriously injured Thursday after his car collided with a semi truck near Everett.
The man, 26, was driving a gray Honda Civic north on I-5, according to the Washington State Patrol. It was shortly after 10 a.m.
He switched from the right lane to the center lane, clipping the left rear bumper of a passing pickup, Trooper Heather Axtman said.
The driver veered on to the left shoulder. Witnesses said he was driving at a high rate of speed.
He again changed into the center lane and headed toward a semi truck. The truck driver, a 42-year-old man from Mount Vernon, saw the Civic coming and felt the impact of the collision, Axtman said.
The Civic collided with the semi at a speed that caused the two vehicles to become stuck together, Axtman said.
The truck driver began pulling his rig over to the side of the interstate, pulling the car along. It took half a mile to slow down and come to a stop, Axtman said.
The Bellevue driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, according to the memo. He was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.
The crash caused a backup of more than 3 miles along I-5, according to the state Department of Transportation. Roadways were re-opened shortly after 12:30 p.m.
