Steve Jobs, the Apple entrepreneur who died Oct. 5, has a local connection.
He attended elementary school with Camano Island artist A. Jeffrey Zigulis.
We wrote about Zigulis and his creations, that include Dream Mask wall hangings, Dec. 17, 2008: “Camano artist infuses masks with personality.”
This week, his brother told him about an article in the Mountain View Voice in Palo Alto, Calif., that included a photograph of Jobs in the sixth grade.
There was Jobs, in the front row, in a striped shirt.
There was Zigulis, in a plaid shirt, with Mr. Lee’s sixth-grade class at San Ramon School.
Jobs lived down the street from Zigulis.
“It was a low-middle class neighborhood,” Zigulis says. “We were in rough schools. There were no neighborhood barbecues. It was not a hunky-dory kind of place.”
He remembers Jobs as being introverted, that his father was a machinist, and never knew Jobs was adopted.
“I hope I was nice to him,” Zigulis says.

–Someone was bound to take things a bit further. We’ve heard of bingo-type fundraisers, featuring cow poop and chicken poop markers. Prizes are awarded on where such droppings land.
Now it’s dog poop.
M-DOG, Marysville Dog Owners Group, offered an informational booth at Jones & Co Pet’s 33rd anniversary sale. They wanted folks to know about a Marysville off leash dog park, “Strawberry Fields for Rover,” at 6100 152nd St. NE in Marysville. M-DOG maintains Strawberry Fields with the city park department.
Leslie Buell, president of M-Dog, says they wanted to create some fun and excitement at the anniversary sale.
“So we added a ‘Poop Toss’ game,” Buell says. “One dollar for three poop tosses into three galvanized buckets. You won prizes depending on the bucket your poop fell into.”
It was a big hit, she says. Everyone won prizes all day long and they raised $200 to buy doggie poop scoop bags for the park.
Buell says they used fake excrement.
“The Fake Poop was from Oriental Trading Company,” Buell says. “It only looked real.”

Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home plans a free public pumpkin decorating event from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 22 at 804 State Ave. in Marysville.
It’s happening rain or shine in the parking lot, with bouncy houses, face painting, pony and hay rides, food and prizes.
Of course, wear a costume.
Danny Mariner, funeral director and embalmer, says the event is for community outreach.
“Wanting to get people in our building to help some of them get over the ‘creepiness’ of a funeral home,” Mariner says. “We did it last year around this season and we had over 150 people come through our building in three hours. A lot of fun and positive feedback.”
