Increasing crude oil costs sending gas prices higher
CAMARILLO, Calif. – Gas prices increased in the past two weeks as the cost of crude oil jumped, and a combination of factors could push prices at the pump even higher, an industry analyst said Sunday.
The average retail price for all three grades increased 6.71 cents to $2 per gallon between Feb. 19 and Friday, said Trilby Lundberg, who publishes the semimonthly Lundberg Survey of 7,000 gas stations across the country.
The most popular grade, self-serve regular, was priced at $1.97 a gallon, while customers paid $2.07 for midgrade. Premium averaged $2.16 a gallon for the period.
During the past two weeks, crude oil prices rose $5.43 to $53.78 per barrel. Lundberg said even higher prices can be expected at the pump.
The highest average gas price in the nation for regular unleaded was $2.32 per gallon in Honolulu. The lowest was $1.76 in Charleston, S.C.
Kansas: BTK suspect not sleeping
The man accused of being the BTK serial killer has complained about depression and asked about his family, who have not talked to him since he was jailed upon arrest on Feb. 25, his lawyers say. Dennis Rader, 60, is charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder in deaths that have haunted Wichita since 1974, when investigators began looking for a man who called himself the “bind, torture, kill” strangler and taunted police with letters and packages sent to media outlets. Along with growing depression, he has complained about sleepless nights, the lawyers said.
Florida: Ice cream truck driver jailed
A 2-year-old boy was fatally injured when he ran into the path of an ice cream truck in the parking lot of his apartment complex in West Palm Beach, and the driver allegedly left the scene, authorities said Sunday. Witnesses said the driver got out of her truck after Saturday’s accident and moved the boy, Moses Joseph, before driving away. Angela Rodriguez, 27, later turned herself in and was charged with leaving the scene of a fatality, which carries a possible 15-year prison sentence.
Texas: Alamo flag found in Mexico
The only flag known to have survived the Battle of the Alamo has been found on display at a museum in Mexico, more than a decade after Mexican officials said they had lost it, a newspaper reported Sunday. Several flags reportedly flew at the Alamo during the March 1836 battle between a small band of Texas fighters and a Mexican army 10 times their number. All except one were destroyed. More than a decade ago, Texas officials stepped up efforts to get the flag back, but the Mexicans said they had lost it. A reporter from The Dallas Morning News recently found the flag at Mexico’s National History Museum.
