SEATTLE — No matter what the Legislature decides about the state budget, the University of Washington is looking to cut about 1,000 jobs.
UW President Mark Emmert told SeattlePI.com it is still unclear how many university employees will be laid off in anticipation of budget cuts. But he says some job cuts are coming, no matter how lawmakers deal with the state’s expected $9 billion deficit.
Emmert says cuts would probably start with administration and public relations jobs.
Layoffs could be announced by the end of April, so employees have 60 days’ notice. UW spokesman Norm Arkans says as many as half the 1,000 job cuts could come from the university not filling open positions.
